Bears & Wildlife in Westwood Hills

We have had a number of sightings of a mama black bear and her four cubs in the Hills over the past three years. Remember, we live in their backyard, not the other way around. They are most likely drawn to green bins and gardens looking for food sources.

Should you unexpectedly encounter the bear family

  • Do not get between mama and her cubs
  • Stand and face the bear directly. Never run away from or approach a bear.
  • Make yourself look as big as possible by spreading your arms and standing tall.
  • Make as much noise as possible by yelling, banging pots and pans, or using other noise-making devices so the bear will not want to stay in the area.
  • Call 311 and report where and when you saw the bear.

The Department of Natural Resources does not trap or relocate bears.

Securing your property

  • Store garbage bins in your garage or a secure shed until collection morning
  • Remove bird feeders from spring through fall
  • Clean barbecue grills after every use
  • Do not leave pet food outside overnight
  • Pick up fallen fruit from trees promptly
  • Use a bear-resistant composter or keep compost secured indoors

Other wildlife in Westwood Hills

Although just fifteen minutes from the Bayers Lake Business Park and the outer border of downtown Halifax, Westwood Hills is nestled in an area of wilderness that spans some half million acres of forests and lakes. Most properties back onto treed areas. Living in the hills, you never know who is going to come and visit your back yard.

Coyotes are also present in the area. Keep small pets on a leash and supervise them outdoors, particularly at dawn and dusk. If you encounter an aggressive coyote, make loud noises and make yourself appear large.
